Week 1 Post 3
Week 1 Post 3
Informal Summary
This week I started the book I will be using as my primary research material for the semesters ELS class. So far I really like the book, I've learned so much in so little reading and I'm excited for the chapters to come. This weeks learning was primarily an overview of what the book will entail, plus the first chapter which was specifically on Northern California. I learned a lot about the history of segregation in that area from WWII until the late 1980s, and a brief discussion of present day. I loved all of the legal terms I have learned in these chapters, it makes me interested in pursuing a law career.
These are some of the questions I have going forward in these chapters:
- What modern day laws, if any, are being made to override the racist policies made in the last century?
- How is has this problem taken affect in the northeastern region of the country?
- How has the souths history with slavery and Jim Crow change how their cities have turned out today?
What was your biggest takeaway so far?
ReplyDeleteThis week I think what stuck with me the most was how national segregation was. It shocked me at first that the area they focused so much on Northern California, an area I always thought of as very liberal and progressive area compared to the rest of the country. But segregation occurred everywhere since racism was so commonplace in the creation of neighborhoods.
